Toners: The Unsung Hero of Skincare
Posted on May 3, 2022
Toners have come a long way in terms of skincare. Back in the early days of skincare technology, this step in the routine went by the name “astringent” and often included stripping ingredients and harmful alcohols. This isn’t the case any longer. Toners come in a wide variety of different types, ranging from hydrating all the way to those that include active acids. So what are they exactly and why are they necessary?
What are toners?
Toners are the middle-man between cleansing and serums or moisturizers. They provide an extra layer of either treatment or moisture that prepares your skin for whatever it is you’re going to be applying afterward. Think of it this way; does soap sink into a dry sponge? No, right? It’s the same sort of thing with your skin. When your skin is damp, anything you’re going to put on afterward is going to sink in so much easier and quicker. They can contain different ingredients that are beneficial for a clear complexion, such as salicylic acid and lactic acid. So this adds a layer of gentle treatment before locking in everything with the moisturizer.
How to apply toner
To apply toners, simply drop a couple of drops onto a cotton round and wipe around the face in an upward motion. You can also put some in a little misting bottle and mist your face if you want more of an Instagram aesthetic! This little trick is my secret to clearing up any maskne.
