Rule #1 of facial scrubs: Always follow up with a mask.
Facial scrubs are a great way to keep your skin healthy and free of toxins, no matter the season. It might already be part of your skincare routine and if it’s not, consider adding it in! We’re here to give you a run down of its benefits and the steps that should always follow.
What do scrubs do?
Remove Buildup As stated by the American Academy of Dermatology, “exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin.” A gentle exfoliator will slough away the dead skin that is likely blocking your pores. When dead skin begins to build up on the surface, the skin hidden underneath is not able to breathe through the dirt, impurities and excess oils. As a result, you may begin to break out or feel heavy.
Clear Your Skin When you shed the dead skin cells from the surface, you are removing all the impurities that burrowed between your skin. The healthier you skin is, the more likely chance you have of getting rid of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.
Brighten Exfoliating scrubs not only remove dead skin, but they reveal brighter, healthier skin! A gentle scrub will leave you with the allure of a natural glow.
Why follow up with a mask?
If there’s one thing to take away from this post, it’s that masking is a MUST after exfoliating. While exfoliating scrubs are great for the skin, they can also be mildly or severely damaging. So, it’s important to use them properly. Only exfoliate 1-3 times a week (based on your skin sensitivity) to avoid major irritation and breakage, and follow up with a hydrating mask. A hydrating face masks will restore any oils and moisture lost during exfoliation, allowing the skin to breath easy. What step is this in my skincare routine?
Not sure where to place these steps in a skincare routine? Here’s a quick rundown of a routine to follow! If you’re ever wondering about where a product falls on your list of steps, check out our skincare bar chart here.
Step 1: Facial cleanser
In every skincare routine, your first step should always be to cleanse! First use a makeup remover to wipe your face clean of any makeup from the day, then thoroughly cleanse!
Step 2: Exfoliate
Cue the facial scrub! Apply a thin layer to the skin, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Then, wash away with lukewarm water.
Step 3: Mask
As stated before, it’s important to rehydrate after exfoliation. Grab your favorite hydrating mask and apply as directed.
Step 4: Serum
Different serums work for different skincare problems. So, whether you’re fighting acne, boosting hydration, or combating any other dermatological problems, grab the serum that best suits your needs and apply to the face and neck. For extra coverage, use a jade roller to help the serum sink into the skin.
Step 5: Moisturize
Every routine should end with a moisturizer. You’ve put your skin through some work, so now it’s time to replace any moisture or oils that may have been stripped from your skin in the process!
Voila! You’ve mastered scrubs and masks.
