What is the science behind breakouts?
ACNE. You love to hate it, but it's one of the most common skin concerns and needs to be addressed. We are constantly bombarded with pictures of clear-skinned beauties on the internet, but chances are they are working hard to get that complexion (or editing their photos because they feel they need to).
The first step to getting rid of acne…
… Is to understand the reason it happens. I'm talking on a scientific level. Get ready for a crash course!
The cause of these red, swollen skin beasts.
Say it with me, HORMONES. When there's a change in hormones, it activates the sebaceous glands that are located at the base of the hair follicle. Sebaceous glands are to blame for that gleam you may see on your forehead, nose, chin and so forth. If your hormones and sebaceous glands occur at the same time, it can produce overactive oil production which causes buildup in the pores. You have sebaceous glands not only on your face but also on your back. Say hello to bacne!
Not all pimples are the same.
There are different types of acne lesions—each with its own recommended treatment. So, not only are zits pesky AF, but picky too!
BLACKHEADS
Often found around the nose, these little foes are also known as "open comedones" or open pores. What gives blackheads their signature look is oxidation. When oil clogs the pore, it oxidizes to a dark color because it is exposed to air.

Salicylic acid and other chemical exfoliants are going to be your best friend in defeating these! It can be used morning and night, and as a spot treatment throughout the day if necessary. And please, for the love of skincare, stay away from pore vacuums!
WHITEHEADS
These are the pimples you see on those satisfying videos. Whiteheads, or "closed comedones," appear when there is a buildup underneath the skin. These may be addicting to pick at, but please refrain!

Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliants are just what you need. Scoop up a killer spot treatment with salicylic acid and step away from the mirror!
