Feed Your Skin We talk a lot about the ways we can externally help keep our skin in great condition. Products definitely help, but many of our skin problems come from how we’re treating ourselves internally. That’s why we have to make sure that we try our best to maintain a lifestyle consisting of healthy foods, rich in ingredients our bodies need to thrive. Here are some things to look for when trying to maintain healthy skin: Antioxidants Foods that are rich in antioxidants encourage your body to defend against inflammation, which is the cause of skin irritation and acne flares ups. Here are some super foods for when your skin needs a little boost. Green Tea Green tea is wonderful for so many reasons. This tea contains polyphenols, which can prevent bacteria and cell damage, as well as reduce inflammation. It can also help to heal blemishes and scars. Green tea contains caffeine, but not nearly as much as coffee, so it can help to give your brain an extra little boost for the day without all the jitters. If all of that wasn’t enough, there has been research to say green tea can help you lose weight, and also lowers your risk of certain cancers, Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s, cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes. Salmon Salmon is widely known for its powers in helping people lose weight. Its richness in fatty acids is also great for producing healthy skin cells. Since we cannot produce them ourselves, consumption of these acids help our body lock in moisture and keep out toxins. This helps our skin look healthy and clear! Antioxidants found in salmon are also great for calming down inflammation. Tomatoes These fruits contain an antioxidant called lycopene that can protect the skin from UV damage. If you are one to spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want to stock up on these! It will lessen the likelihood of sunburn and skin damage so that your skin stays clear. Vitamins Vitamins serve so many different functions when it comes to our skin. We need them to stay healthy both inside and out. Here are a few vitamins you should have a balanced diet of and what foods provide them. Vitamins B1 & B6 Vitamin B is known for strengthening skin, hair, and nails. There are many factors that contribute to the deterioration of strength, such as alcohol consumption or exercising. It’s important to re-fuel our bodies with these vitamins to keep our skin looking its best. Your best foods for these vitamins come from rice, pasta, breads and cereal. Having a balance of these in your diet will also help to control sebum production, your body’s natural oil production glands. Vitamins A, C, & E Tight skin is the ultimate barrier for protection. The antioxidants in these vitamins work together so that you have the best protection possible from free radicals and UV rays. Vitamin A regulates cell growth, vitamin C increases production of collagen, and vitamin E protects the skin from damage. There is a noticeable difference in the skin and body when you are lacking these vitamins. Some of the best foods rich in these vitamins are your greens, vegetables, and almonds.
